Daily Prayer to St. Jude Thaddeus

Most holy Apostle Saint Jude Thaddeus, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, the name of the traitor who delivered the beloved Master into the hands of His enemies, has caused you to be forgotten by many but the Church honours and invokes you universally as the patron of hopeless cases, of things despaired of. Pray for me who am so miserable; make use I implore you, of this particular privilege accorded to you, to bring visible and speedy help, where help is almost despaired of. Come to my assistance in this great need that I may receive the consolations and succour of Heaven in all my necessities, tribulations and sufferings, particularly (here, make your special request) and that I may bless God with you and all the elect forever. I promise you, O Blessed Saint Jude, to be ever mindful of this great favour and I will never cease to honour you as my special and powerful patron and to do all in my power to encourage devotion to you. Amen.

(Introduction to the Epistle of St. Jude)

Jude verse 17–25

(exhortation; doxology)

But remember, my dear friends, what the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ foretold. ‘At the final point of time’, they told you, ‘there will be mockers who follow nothing but their own godless desires.’ It is they who cause division, who live according to nature and do not possess the Spirit.

But you, my dear friends, must build yourselves up on the foundation of your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit; keep yourselves within the love of God and wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to give you eternal life. To some you must be compassionate because they are wavering; others you must save by snatching them from the fire; to others again you must be compassionate but wary, hating even the tunic stained by their bodies.

To him who can keep you from falling and bring you safe to his glorious presence, innocent and joyful, to the only God, our Saviour, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, authority and power, before all ages, now and forever. Amen.

The Word of the Lord…

Exegesis:

In verses 17-19, Jude recalls the apostolic warning about the coming of the infiltrators who would sow division in the Church and lead many astray (see Mk 13:22; Acts 20:30; 1 Tm 4:1–3; 2 Pt 3:3). He then goes on (in 20-21) to encourage the Christians to build themselves up on the foundations of the Christian faith, in the spirit of prayer, compassion and love, in order to become beneficiaries of Christ’s mercy and eternal life. Verse 22-23 depicts the different modes of our relationship with others, viz: On those who waver, have compassion; save others by snatching them out of the fire; on others have mercy with fear, hating even the tunic stained by their bodies: this imagery may come from Zec 3:3–5, the very garments of the godless are to be abhorred because of their contagion.

Above all, the epistle ends with verses 24–25. First, we see the liturgical statement about the power of God to keep the faithful from stumbling, and praise to him through Jesus Christ. Second, the letter reaches its conclusion by returning to the themes with which it began – doxology (cf. Jude 1–2).

Points for reflection:

We have been reading from St. Jude’s epistle through this period of the Novena, and have come to a better knowledge of his epistle and person. Jude’s epistle has served to warn us against the presence of the infiltrators in our midst. Obviously, we are also living in the era of the infiltrators who have dealt severely with the Christian faith in deeds and words. What efforts are we making to stay strong and persevere in these trying times?

DAY 9 PRAYER

O holy Saint Jude, apostle and martyr, as the novena in your honour draws to an end today, grant that we may always seek to please God in working out our salvation in this life. We have many needs and necessities, but God knows them all.

Today we turn to you, asking you to intercede for all those participating in this novena, and those in need of hope; that they may find peace and joy in this time of prayer and reflection. May we not always seek temporal goods but rather what will profit our souls. we know that it will profit us nothing if we gain the whole world yet suffer the loss of our souls. Therefore, may we incline ourselves toward the divine will, seeing God’s good and gracious purpose in all our trials. Amen.

O, Saint Jude Thaddeus, cousin of Jesus Christ, glorious apostle and martyr, renowned for virtues and miracles, faithful and prompt intercessor of all who honour you and trust in you. You are a powerful patron and helper in grievous afflictions. I come to you and entreat you from the depths of my heart to come to my aid with your powerful intercession, for you have received from God the privilege to assist those who almost despair of all hope. Look down upon me, my life is a life of crosses; my days are days of tribulation; my paths are strewn with thorns, and scarcely one moment passes but is a witness of my tears and sighs.

Overwhelmed by these thoughts, I see myself surrounded by a dark cloud. You cannot forsake me in this sad plight. I will not depart from you until you have heard me. O hasten to my aid. I will be grateful to you all my life. I will honour you as my special and powerful patron, I will thank God for the graces bestowed upon you and will propagate your honour and devotion according to my power. Amen.

PRAYER TO SAINT JUDE THADDEUS FOR URGENT FINANCIAL HELP (Optional)

Saint Jude Thaddeus, Apostle of Christ and glorious Martyr, great intercessor in all difficult problems. Today I turn to you with great faith to ask for your generous assistance for I am afflicted and tormented by the lack of economic means. You who are my beloved saint, my blessed patron and noble protector welcome my soul and my body, my mind, and heart; I humbly prostrate before you, ask by the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, that you cast me a compassionate glance and despise not my heartfelt prayer, so my confidence be not in vain. You who, in addition to a singular love, were united with links of kinship to the Divine Redeemer Jesus Christ, source of all good, and are a powerful aid of the desperate. Pray for me my patron saint, my aid, so that, assisted by your precious intercession, I may receive a prompt and efficacious solution for my overwhelming needs. Make it so that I can obtain urgently, needed cash to meet all my expenses, payments, debts, and have peace of mind and tranquillity. Make it so, I beg you, with the certainty of being heard, that I obtain what I need so much: (Ask for everything that you want to attain) Blessed Saint Jude, I honour you with special affection and devotion, hand me the presence and strength of God. Protect me in all circumstances, may your help and consolation never cease. Concluding Prayer

Saint Jude Thaddeus, faithful friend and cousin of Jesus, we greet and praise you for the faithfulness and love with which you carried out your mission. Called and sent by Jesus, you are one of the twelve columns that support the Church of Christ. Countless persons have found their way to the Father through our Lord Jesus Christ by imitating your example and helped by your prayer. I want to imitate you by committing myself to Christ and to the Church, out of a determined love for God and neighbour, especially for the poorest. Grant that as we go to bed tonight, we may be filled with joy and peace of one who has already received favours from God through your intercession. I promise you, O blessed Saint Jude Thaddeus, to always remember this grace and never fail to praise and honour you. I will do everything to spread through my life and my testimony the love taught by Jesus and lived by you. Amen
