POWERFUL NOVENA TO THE PRECIOUS BLOOD OF JESUS: DAY 5

INTRODUCTION: The veneration of the Precious Blood of Our Divine Saviour dates back to the time of the Passion when it was shed. It is rooted in the fundamental doctrine of the Incarnation, which teaches that the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity assumed a human nature, uniting it with His divine nature in what is known as the hypostatic union. Thus, every aspect of Christ’s human nature, including His Precious Blood, is inseparably united with the second divine Person. Consequently, the Precious Blood is worthy of the same adoration, known as Latria, that is given to God Himself. This devotion to the Precious Blood is not reliant on private revelations but finds its firm foundation in the deposit of the Faith. Moving into more recent times, St. Gaspar Buffalo, the founder of the Congregation of the Precious Blood of Jesus Christ, played a significant role in promoting devotion to the Precious Blood. During Pope Pius IX’s exile from Rome in 1849, his companion, Don Giovanni Merlini, the third general of the Congregation, suggested that if the Pope were to regain the papal territory, he should make a vow to extend the Feast of the Precious Blood to the entire Church. This Feast had already been celebrated by the Fathers of the Most Precious Blood on the Friday after the Fourth Sunday of Lent. Ultimately, it was Pope Pius IX who officially instituted a special feast in honor of the Precious Blood. Later, Pope St. Pius X moved the feast from the first Sunday of July to July 1st. Finally, in commemoration of the 19th centennial of the mystery of the Redemption, Pope Pius XI elevated the rank of the feast day. This highlights the enduring significance and importance of devotion to the Precious Blood throughout the history of the Church.

Day 5

Opening Prayer: Heavenly Father, as we come before You on this fifth day of the Novena to the Most Precious Blood, we acknowledge the infinite mercy and love that flow from the wounds of Your Son, Jesus Christ. We thank You for the gift of His Precious Blood, which washes away our sins and restores us to grace. On this day, we pray for the grace of humility, recognizing our need for Your mercy and the transforming power of Your Son’s Blood (State your intentions). Through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary and all the saints, may this Novena draw us closer to Your Son, who is our source of hope and salvation. Amen.

Scriptural Reading/Meditation: (1 Peter 1:17-21)

“17 Since you call on a Father who judges each person’s work impartially, live out your time as foreigners here in reverent fear. 18 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. 20 He was chosen before the creation of the world but was revealed in these last times for your sake. 21 Through him, you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God.”

The Word of the Lord…

During the Precious Blood Novena, let us meditate on the significance of Christ’s sacrifice and the redemption we receive through His precious blood. May we approach God with reverence and awe, acknowledging His holiness and justice. Let us appreciate the priceless gift of salvation bestowed upon us through the selfless act of Jesus on the cross. As we continue our journey as foreigners in this world, may our faith and hope be firmly anchored in God, who raised Christ from the dead and offers us the assurance of eternal life through His Precious Blood.

Concluding Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, on this fifth day of the Novena, we reflect on the depth of Your sacrifice and the unfathomable love You have for each of us. Your Precious Blood flows as a river of mercy, washing away our sins and making us new creations in You. As we seek to grow in humility and trust in Your saving power, grant us the grace to surrender our lives completely to Your will. May Your Precious Blood be our refuge and our strength, especially in times of trial and temptation. We entrust our prayers to the intercession of Mary, our Mother, and all the saints, as we continue to journey through this Novena, drawing closer to Your Sacred Heart through the power of Your Precious Blood. Amen.
