POWERFUL NOVENA TO THE PRECIOUS BLOOD OF JESUS: DAY 9

INTRODUCTION: The veneration of the Precious Blood of Our Divine Saviour dates back to the time of the Passion when it was shed. It is rooted in the fundamental doctrine of the Incarnation, which teaches that the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity assumed a human nature, uniting it with His divine nature in what is known as the hypostatic union. Thus, every aspect of Christ’s human nature, including His Precious Blood, is inseparably united with the second divine Person. Consequently, the Precious Blood is worthy of the same adoration, known as Latria, that is given to God Himself. This devotion to the Precious Blood is not reliant on private revelations but finds its firm foundation in the deposit of the Faith. Moving into more recent times, St. Gaspar Buffalo, the founder of the Congregation of the Precious Blood of Jesus Christ, played a significant role in promoting devotion to the Precious Blood. During Pope Pius IX’s exile from Rome in 1849, his companion, Don Giovanni Merlini, the third general of the Congregation, suggested that if the Pope were to regain the papal territory, he should make a vow to extend the Feast of the Precious Blood to the entire Church. This Feast had already been celebrated by the Fathers of the Most Precious Blood on the Friday after the Fourth Sunday of Lent. Ultimately, it was Pope Pius IX who officially instituted a special feast in honor of the Precious Blood. Later, Pope St. Pius X moved the feast from the first Sunday of July to July 1st. Finally, in commemoration of the 19th centennial of the mystery of the Redemption, Pope Pius XI elevated the rank of the feast day. This highlights the enduring significance and importance of devotion to the Precious Blood throughout the history of the Church.

Day 9

Opening Prayer: Heavenly Father, as we gather on this ninth and final day of the Novena to the Most Precious Blood, we approach You with hearts overflowing with gratitude and love. Your Son, Jesus Christ, shed His Precious Blood for the salvation of all humanity, and we are humbled by the immensity of this gift. On this day, we pray for the grace of perseverance, that we may remain steadfast in our devotion to Your Son’s Precious Blood throughout our lives (State your intentions). Through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary and all the saints, may this Novena be a source of enduring spiritual renewal and a deeper union with Christ, who is our hope and our salvation. Amen.

Scriptural Reading/Meditation: (John 19:31-37)

“31 Now it was the day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jewish leaders did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down. 32 The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other. 33 But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water. 35 The man who saw it has given testimony, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe. 36 These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: ‘Not one of his bones will be broken,’ 37 and, as another scripture says, ‘They will look on the one they have pierced.'”

The Gospel of the Lord…

As we conclude this meditation during the Precious Blood Novena, we are reminded of the immeasurable value of Jesus’ Precious Blood shed on the cross for our salvation. It is through His sacrifice that we find redemption, forgiveness, and the hope of eternal life. The piercing of Jesus’ side, flowing with blood and water, symbolizes the fountain of grace and mercy that washes away our sins and brings new life to all who believe.

In contemplating this passage, let us respond to the boundless love of Christ by embracing His sacrifice with gratitude and humility. May His Precious Blood cleanse us, renew us, and empower us to live lives of love and service to others. As we journey through the Precious Blood Novena, may we draw near to Jesus, recognizing the depth of His sacrifice, and finding solace in the assurance that His blood speaks a message of redemption and reconciliation for all who come to Him in faith.

Let us continually seek the guidance and strength of the Holy Spirit to live as witnesses to Christ’s love and the power of His Precious Blood. May His sacrifice inspire us to live with compassion, mercy, and selflessness, reflecting His light and sharing the message of salvation with the world. As we meditate on the precious sacrifice of our Lord, may our hearts be transformed, and may we live in the fullness of His grace, giving glory to God for the abundant gift of His Precious Blood.

Concluding Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, on this ninth and final day of the Novena, we contemplate the mystery of Your Precious Blood, poured out for our salvation. Your sacrifice is a wellspring of grace, and we thank You for the countless blessings that flow from Your Blood. As we conclude this Novena, we pray that the devotion to Your Precious Blood may always be alive in our hearts, drawing us closer to You and transforming us into instruments of Your love and mercy in the world. Through the intercession of Mary, our Mother, and all the saints, may we remain faithful to Your teachings and continue to proclaim Your saving power to all we encounter. Amen.
